Code MAMA – Design for Unicef Presentation from cindy wong on Vimeo.
Code MAMA (Mobile Assistance for Medical Aid) is a mobile outreach service aimed to reconnect community health workers after major disasters strikes. Research shows that its these NGO organizations that need the resources to quickly reassemble their staff/volunteers after emergencies. Code MAMA aims to provide an easy tool kit. It was the byproduct of the ITP class, Design for Unicef.
Background:
In the developing world, health resources can be unreliable on a country’s infrastructure level. There may not be enough doctors/nurses, institutions, or money. Sometimes, geography or customs may prevent a person from seeking help until their health situation is too dire for effective treatment. That’s where charities and NGOs, like Unicef, can play a big role by providing access to resources and health education.
Mission:
Create a design solution for organizations that already work in the developing world for maternal health. Our target user were health workers who are using basic cellphone technology to communicate/monitor the health of expecting mothers.
Target Usage
Scenarios and results of using Code MAMA
A) How to track displaced staff/volunteers spread across an area?
B) Generate a Disaster Assessment for volunteer organizations from state/region/local level
C) Report on staff/volunteers with phone polling
D) Broadcast info out to workers via hotline
Platform + Implementation
Technology utilized: Server, Asterick, Database.
Staff have been trained to react in a Code MAMA disaster scenario. The emergency disaster hotline is deployed.
1) The organization issues a status report phone call to all staff to check in.
2) Staff can call into the organization’s disaster hotline when they are able to.
3. Hotline guides callers through a phone-tree of basic questions to answer to get an assessment.
4. Information is collected from the polling and is accessible via website/database for organizational reports/inquiries.
